Business Software Alliance tempts ‘whistleblowers’ with £10,000 reward

Sep 28, 2010

With an online campaign created by dnx, BSA is hoping to encourage employees in various organisations to shop their boss. This we hope will be achieved by placing online banners on computing.co.uk, focusing in particular on the recruitment section.

As well as generating leads, the campaign aims to raise awareness of the use of illegal software in the workplace – approximately 27% of the software installed on PCs is unlicensed (IDC report, 2009).

Recent research showed that over two thirds of British workers are willing to shop their boss for improper business practices. In the first six months of 2010, the BSA received tip-offs about 145 UK companies and subsequently took legal action against 80 of them.

“This is a serious business issue in the UK. People don’t realise the risks of using unlicensed or pirated software and it’s unfair to ask employees to use something that is basically illegal,” said Julian Swan, Director, Compliance Marketing EMEA at the BSA. “We’re letting people know that they don’t have to put up with it while also protecting the interests of the software industry.”

In order to reach as wide an audience as possible, the ‘whistleblower’ online campaign has been developed to include online banners, emails and a microsite, all of which has been created and managed by dnx. We’re now watching to see just how many employees are going to respond and take the BSA up on the offer of earning a possible £10,000 in reward money. Watch this space!
