Crystal Reports is a reporting solution that enables users to transform dull data into exciting charts, graphs and interactive dashboards.

To promote the 2008 release of Crystal Reports to developers (a notoriously marketing-averse group), we created a campaign based on two characters, One and Zero.

We sent the developers an illustrated children’s book, One and Zero’s Happy Day. The book told the story of how, with the help of a software genius (a shameless bit of audience flattery), One and Zero escape from their dreary database into the wonderful, colourful world of Crystal Reports.

At the end of the book, readers were directed to www.oneandzerohappyday.com where they could learn more about the product, download the free trial software and play One and Zero’s online game.

Initially, 750 books were sent out in the Nordics. 31.95% of recipients visited the website.

Emails and online banners were also used and the campaign was rolled out in the UK and other key European markets via other Business Objects partners. The website received 3474 unique visitors. 708 (20%) downloaded the free trial software in the first month of the campaign.
